Port Whitby, Whitby

Port Whitby detached homes for sale

Detached houses in Port Whitby come in two very different flavours. The pre-war streets near the harbour and west of Brock Street hold cottages and storey-and-a-half houses from the 1890s to the 1940s, on narrow lots with detached garages or none, many of them renovated with additions or second storeys; these are the closest houses to the GO station in all of Whitby. Whitby Shores, built from the late 1990s into the 2000s west of the harbour, is the other flavour: two-storey brick houses with attached garages on planned streets around a school and a greenway, with the lake a few blocks south. On the older houses check foundations, knob-and-tube or early wiring, additions built without permits and any heritage listing; on the Whitby Shores houses check roof and furnace ages, grading and whether the basement was finished properly. Rail and highway noise varies street by street, so visit at night.

Questions people ask about Port Whitby

Are the old cottages near the harbour worth buying?

For the right buyer, yes: they offer the shortest walk to Whitby GO and the marina, and renovated examples are charming. Budget for old foundations, small lots and possible heritage listing that governs exterior changes. Get a thorough inspection, ask about insurance on older wiring, and confirm what the lot's zoning permits if you plan to expand.

What is Whitby Shores like for families?

It was designed for them. Whitby Shores Public School sits in the middle, streets loop around a greenway, the Waterfront Trail and Iroquois Park are a walk away, and the houses are 1990s and 2000s two-storeys with garages. Drawbacks are wind off the lake, limited shopping on the south side and the single main road out to Victoria Street.

How much noise comes from the 401 and the trains?

It depends on the street. Houses within a block of the rail corridor and the 401 hear freight and traffic day and night; Whitby Shores and the streets south of Victoria are noticeably quieter, with the lake dominating. Spend an evening on the porch of any house you are serious about, and ask about window upgrades.
