How the town is laid out
Picture Whitby as a ladder of east-west roads climbing north from the lake. Highway 401 runs just above the waterfront, with interchanges at Brock Street and Thickson Road. Dundas Street, which is also Highway 2, is the old main street and the spine of downtown. Rossland Road and Taunton Road are the next two rungs, and Highway 407 crosses the top of the built-up area before the farmland begins. Brock Street runs north-south through the middle and becomes Baldwin Street in Brooklin. On that frame the communities fall into place, roughly: Port Whitby lies south of the 401; Downtown Whitby, Lynde Creek to its west and Blue Grass Meadows to its east near Thickson sit between the 401 and Rossland; Pringle Creek and Rolling Acres fill the middle band; Williamsburg is the northwest quadrant below Taunton; Taunton North climbs to the 407; Brooklin is the village and its subdivisions beyond the highway; and Rural Whitby is the countryside and hamlets such as Ashburn and Myrtle. MLS lines do not always match local usage; each guide describes its own edges.
